Preparing For Lent!

“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”  Matthew 6:16-18

Lent is fast approaching! In a little over a week, we will be embarking on a similar journey as Jesus did while walking and praying through temptation in the desert. This is an important time of year for the church and for us as followers of Christ. There are many ways to mark the season, but this week is a great time to reflect and prepare your heart for Lent.

The wonderful thing about Lent is that we can use it as a specific time period during the year to ask God to transform our lives. God can help your figure out where you need to grow or change and He can also deepen your joy, love and service to others!

By praying for spiritual guidance ahead of Ash Wednesday, we allow ourselves to fully embrace and give of ourselves to Jesus, as well as making sure you don’t miss the first few weeks of lent just trying to figure out what to do. Instead of thinking of Lent as a period to dread or avoid, think of it as a time to receive what God has to give us!

Lent can certainly be more than just giving up chocolate or sweets. It can be as serious as fasting if you feel as though God is calling you to do that, or maybe it is volunteering every week, or spending more time with your children. Take this time to really listen to God and figure out how he wants you to grow as a person. Remember, you don’t have to do this alone either! Involve your spouse, family or friends too! Show them that Lent can be a time to reflect and absorbs God’s blessings, joy and grace.
