Alternatives for your Christian Valentines Day!

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” John 13: 34-35

Spreading Jesus’ Love!

Valentines Day is coming up soon! Although the Christian reaction to this holiday varies, there is no doubt that behind all the commercialized hearts, roses and candy, the best thing we can celebrate is God’s gift of love to us!

Instead of thinking of February 14th as only a day to celebrate romantic love for your significant other or spouse, consider also using this day as one to spread Jesus’ love for others! Call, e-mail or visit a friend you haven’t heard from in awhile, or even the elderly homebound in your area. Instead of spending money on an expensive date night, think about donating it to a worthy cause, or pay it forward to those in front of you at a coffee shop!

Another fun “love” activity you can do with your family or discuss in bible study is to look at the great loves stories of the bible. Some examples are Jacob and Rachel, Tobias and Sarah, or even the Bride and Groom in the Song of Songs. There are many other great stories in the bible that can teach us lessons about relationships!

There are lots of different ways to celebrate Valentines Day in a more Christian way. We can easily turn this holiday’s focus on God’s love instead of the commercialized love in our stores and on our shelves. The best part about this is you’re free to continue spreading the love every day of the year!
