Ways to lift spirits during the Polar Vortex!

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

Beating the Winter Blues!

Much of the United States has been battling the “Polar Vortex” cold blast all throughout January. The effects of the unusually low temperatures, ice storms and high winds have not only taken a toll on our outside environment, it may have also affected your overall happiness and mood!

Although many people experience the “winter blues” or even Seasonal Affective Disorder, the recent cold snap may have caught you a little off guard. Maybe you are finding yourself or even your congregation a little extra tired and sluggish these days, and that’s ok! The important thing to do is get people involved, moving around, and looking to the Easter season with a renewed sense of hope and energy!

Here are a few suggestions to help your church beat the blues!

  • Exercise is one of the best ways to get those endorphins flowing. Organize an exercise group that meets in the church gymnasium, or even at a local school or mall to walk around together. Being outside is good too, but in many areas it is too cold and dangerous!
  • Get some sunlight! You don’t even have to be outside to get more sunlight in the winter. Sitting near windows and keeping your shades up is a good way to insure you get enough Vitamin D. If your church space has a lot of windows, consider hosting a mid morning sunlight bible study! This is a great way to invite everyone into a sunny space, reflect on a certain part of the bible or religious topic, and of course it helps get people out and being social!
  • Eating a healthy diet is also helpful in these dark and cold winter months. Whole wheat, rice, and lots of vegetables and fruits are all great choices. If you don’t already, have a soup and sandwich potluck night at the church for a nutritious dinner! What a great way to have fellowship with your members, giving them a place to come and get a healthy meal. Hopefully the cold won’t last too long as we set our eyes on the coming spring and Jesus’ heavenly resurrection!
